I found this neat article on the old art of hedge laying. Basically you construct a living fence or hedge out of trees that are planted and then cut over and woven into your hedge.

Below is a picture of a new hedge row that has just been cut and laid over to form a living fence line.

Hedge laying is a neat idea and something that has been used in Europe for a thousand years or more. It seems to be a good way to construct a fence line that’s relatively inexpensive compared to barbed wire and one that can provide a good barrier to keep livestock in and unwanted animals out. If I were in need of putting up a fence this is something that I would definitely consider.
