I usually only write about traditional skills but I felt that this was a subject that warranted being mentioned. I am sure that by now everyone has heard about the shooting at the Newtown school. Having a child I can’t imagine what it must be like for the families that lost children in this shooting.

It occurs to me that this country is going to hell and the young adults and teens now have little reverence for life or respect for anything other than themselves. I know this is a huge generalization, but it seems like kids these days have no real grasp on reality. Many of them lack any sensible parenting and have not been taught to respect others and to know what it is to be a part of society.

They are allowed to play video games that are all about killing from an early age. They are not taught that killing a person is a horrible thing, and that they should not even think about it. All their experiences growing up concerning killing is that it is just a fun game. Seriously what is the matter with people in this country? Why is this acceptable? How have we gotten so far away from being good humans?

One of the reasons I like traditional skills such as green woodworking and blacksmithing is that it is a link to the past. It is void of the technology that has degraded our society. It is somehow pure in its form and function. We need more of this in this country. People have lost sight of what it is to be human. They are walking zombies only interested in texting on their phones all day long and playing video games or watching television.

I think if more people got kids into doing something productive with their hands we would have a more grounded and productive youth. This shooting is a wake up call to all of us. We need to be more active in the youth and help teach them to be productive and good. Teach them to be different from the norm of being a drone. Teach them to care for and help others around them, and by doing so find out that they can be good people and feel good about it.

I am sorry to rant as such. I am not against guns by any means. I find that they are useful tools for harvesting game for which to feed ones family. They are just tools like an axe or chisel, but need a rational person to use them properly. I do however have a problem with the lack of respect for life in this country, and think people need to focus on teaching our young people the proper way to live.
